AECOMStandard Operating Procedure
DPT Groundwater Sampling
5.4 Borehole Abandonment
• After sampling, all boreholes must be sealed to prevent the spread of contaminants with
depth and to eliminate direct pathways from the surface to the subsurface and
groundwater. Surface materials such as asphalt and cement that have been drilled or
pushed though must also be repaired to a satisfactory condition.
The drilling subcontractor, under supervision of the rig geologist, will complete borehole
abandonment. The subcontractor will supply all necessary materials listed above. Abandon all
boreholes according to the following procedures:
1. After a boring has been completed by DPT technique, remove the drive rods, slowly pour the
granular bentonite down the hole, and hydrate with potable water. Alternately, fill hole with
bentonite slung.
2. If the borehole is through asphalt or concrete, leave the seal below the bottom of the pavement
to allow for sufficient fill and patching material.
3. Patch pavement with appropriate material.
4. Mark the boring location with a clearly labeled stake or flag that indicates the site and
borehole number.
6.0 Training and/or Qualifications
All persons performing the activities described in this SOP must have read and have an understanding of the
contents. An understanding of project-specific plans(e.g.,sampling and analysis plan,QAPP,work plan)and
requirements is also recommended.
