In KLEINFELDER
File No. 20-3978-ol.w10
July 26, 1997
4.17 Geotechnical Services (File No 20-3978-01.G011
Based on the results of the subsurface assessment conducted in this area, Kleinfelder had the
following recommendations detailed in our report"Limited Geotechnical Services, (Phase I ESA
Recommendation No. 23), Former Spreckels Sugar Plant No. 2, 18800 South Spreckels Road,
Manteca, California"dated February 24, 1997:
1. A surface and subsurface slab exists in the factory building area. The subsurface slab exists
at a depth of approximately 4 to 8 feet below grade. The two slabs are connected by concrete
piers or columns. The remainder of the area between the two slabs was filled with nearby
soils. It is Kleinfelder's recommendation that both slabs and the fill between the slabs be
entirely removed prior to development.
2. Organic soil in the composting area should either be removed and either hauled off site prior
to construction, used in landscape areas or stabilized with lime pond material. Clay soil in
the vicinity of Boring G-20 should be considered expansive.
3. Some of the organic soil in the feed lot/tare dirt area are highly organic and not suitable for
use as an Engineered Fill or for supporting permanent structures. Some of the soil is so
organic that it can not even be stabilized with lime pond material. Therefore, the organic soil
should be completely removed from any building or pavement area. Perched water was
noted to exist in this area, and may hamper grading operations during wet weather seasons.
10-3978-01.W1011017L155 Page 32 of 50 Copyright 1997,Kleinfe/der,Inc.
