File No. 20-3978-01.WR9 kn K t E I N F F t D E R
December 9, 1996
B-2.3 Collection of Soil Samples
Soil samples are collected approximately every 5 feet for field screening and logging.
Samples are collected by advancing the boring to a point immediately above the desired
sampling depth and then driving (vertical borings) or pushing (slant borings) a Modified
California Sampler, lined with three brass tubes, into the undisturbed soil. The sampler is
then removed from the bottom of the boring. The ends of the bottom (third) tube are
covered with Teflon and sealed with tight fitting plastic caps.
Each sample is individually labeled. The label includes Kleinfelder's name, job number,
the date and time the sample was collected, the employee number of the individual who
performed the sampling, and a unique five-digit sample identification number. A custody
seal may be placed on the sample in such a way that any attempt to tamper with the sample
is easily visible.
B-2.4 Sample Handling
After labeling, the sample is immediately stored in an iced cooler for transport to
Meinfelder's office sample control or to the analytical laboratory. A Kleinfelder chain-of-
custody form accompanies the cooler. The chain-of-custody form includes Kleinfelder's
name, address, and telephone number, the employee number of the individual who
performed the sampling, the sample numbers, the date and time the samples were collected,
the number of containers each sample occupies, and the analyses for which the samples are
being submitted, if any. When the samples are delivered, the chain-of-custody form is
signed by each person who handles the samples, including all Kleinfelder employees and
the receiving employee of office sample control or the analytical laboratory.
B-2.5 Decontamination of Equipment
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, augers and associated equipment are steam
cleaned prior to drilling each boring. In addition, sampling equipment is cleaned with a
trisodium-phosphate or laboratory detergent wash and rinsed with distilled water prior to
collecting each soil sample.
B-2.6 Soil Cutting Disposal
Drill cuttings are placed in 55-gallon drums or on top of and covered by polyvisquene for
storage. The soil is left on site for disposal by the site owner. If requested, Kleinfelder can
coordinate disposal of soil and water after analytical results are available.
20-3978-01.WR91MR960143 Page 8-2 01996, Kleinfelder, Inc.
