File No. 20-3978-01.7 2 KLEINFELDER
November 12, 1996
Hand Auger Soil Sampling
Soil samples will be collected at depths of 0 to 6 inches (i.e. the surface), and three to five
feet below the pond bottoms. The proposed sampling locations arc shown on Plate 2.
The proposed number and location of the hand auger borings/samples is described below.
Sampling Location Number of Hand Sample Total No. of
Auger Borings De th s * Sam les
Existing Waste water Ponds 3 per pond Surface
4ponds) total of 12 and five feet 24
Former Waste water Ponds 3 per pond Surface
7ponds) total of 21 and three feet 42
Finger Ponds 2 per pond Surface
2ponds) total of 4 and three feet 8
Existing Mud Ponds 3 per pond Surface
4ponds) total of 12 and three feet 24
Former Beet Pulp Drying
Pond Surface
1 and total of 5 and three feet 10
Representative
Random Locations ' total of 12 One foot 12
* Sample depths from existing pond bottoms or site grade.
A decontaminated hand auger will be used to advance each soil boring to the desired
sampling depth. Soil samples will be obtained by driving a 2-inch diameter by 6-inch
long brass tube into the soil using a slide hammer. The brass tube is then removed from
the boring and sealed with Teflon sheeting and plastic end caps. The sample is then
labeled, and placed in an iced cooler pending transportation to the analytical laboratory
under chain of custody protocols. Augering and sampling equipment will be
decontaminated between borings and as necessary to prevent cross contamination. Water
used to decontaminate equipment will be disposed of in the existing waste water ponds.
The hand auger borings will be logged, and sampled according to the protocol described
in Attachment B. The soil samples collected will be field screened using an organic
vapor detector as described in Attachment B, Section B-2.2. The hand auger borings will
be backfilled with the cuttings generated during sampling.
Laboratory Analysis
One soil sample from each hand auger location will be selected for quantitative analysis
will be submitted under chain-of-custody control to Sequoia Analytical Laboratories
(Sequoia) of Sacramento, California. Sequoia is certified by the California Department of
Toxic Substances to perform the requested analyses. It is anticipated that samples will be
analyzed on a normal laboratory turnaround schedule, which usually requires up to 10
working days for receipt of analytical data.
20-3978-OI.PO2/MP960132/WR960015 Page 2 of 01996, Kleinfelder, Inc.
