2 . 5 . 9 Barium
Samples taken from the Site have exhibited barium levels
ranging up to 140 ppm. The STLC in soil for barium is 100 ppm
and the TTLC is 10, 000 ppm. Acute exposure symptoms associated
with barium are irritation to eyes, nose, throat, and exposed
skin. Routes of exposure are ingestion and/or inhalation of
dusts containing barium. Chronic exposure symptoms are smooth
muscle disfunction, increased intestinal peristalsis, vascular
constriction and bladder contraction. Inhalation of dusts
leads to benign pneumoconiosis of the lungs.
2 . 5. 10 Vanadium
Site soil concentrations range up to 63 ppm vanadium. The STLC
for vanadium is 24 ppm and the TTLC is 2 ,400 ppm in soil. The
chief route of exposure is inhalation of dust containing
vanadium compounds. The acute symptoms of exposure are
irritation to eyes and skin, itchy skin lesions, greenish
discoloration of the tongue. Brief exposure can result in
painful irritation to the respiratory system, sore throat,
cough, tracheitis, bronchitis,
expectoration and chest pain. Chronic exposure results in
pulmonary edema and severe pneumonia. Long or chronic exposure
to vanadium has shown that it can inhibit cholesterol synthesis
and cholinesterase activity.

GOURTPAPER
OTATM OF GuroLxU
STD. 113 (REV.8-731 —7-
34188
