The soil had petroleum odor and Photo-ionization
detector (PID) indicated the presence of hydrocarbon contamination in the soil as deep
as 90 feet below surface grade (bsg) during the installation of monitoring well (MW) #2.
After discussion with the geologist from BSK & Associates, the following adjustments
to the work plan were made in order to maximize the effectiveness of the investigative
work:
1) The screen length of each well was increased to 20 feet and the screen was set at 70
to 90 feet bsg. Groundwater was first encountered at about 82 to 85 feet bsg during
well construction, but static water is at approximately 73 feet bsg.
2) Boring#2 (B-2) was advanced to 100 feet bsg in order to define the vertical extent of
the contamination. Soil samples were collected from the vadose zone, the capillary
fringe, and the water bearing zone.
3) A water sample from the domestic well was collected for laboratory analyses due to
its close proximity to the contamination source and the strong odor noted in MW-
1.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Jeffrey Wong , REHS Margara Lagorio, REHS
LOP/Site Mitigation Unit IV Supervisor
c: CRWQCB, Central Valley Region -Mark List
c: BSK & Associates -John C.
