It is generally found as a mixture of three isomers; orth-, <br /> meta-,and para-xylene. Xylene has a relatively low volatility(vapor pressure=8 mm Hg at 68°F) and will <br /> likely.be present in soils in both the liquid and vapor form. The flash point of xylene is 81*F, classifying <br /> it as a flammable liquid. <br /> Xylene can enter the body through all four routes of exposure: <br /> 1. Inhalation 2. Absorption 3. Ingestion 4. Injection <br /> Target organs are the central nervous system, eyes, gastrointestinal tract,blood, liver, kidneys and skin. <br /> Acute exposure effects include dizziness, excitement, drowsiness, in-coordination, abdominal pain and <br /> irritation of the nose and throat. The PEL for xylene is 100 ppm. <br /> PERSONNEL PROTECTION <br /> Personnel working around drilling activity will wear hard hats, work gloves, long-sleeved shirts and pants. <br /> All people not directly involved in the site investigation will be asked to leave. The site is a mini market <br /> serving the public, however, the public will be required to say away from the actual work. <br /> All inflammable materials will be stored in drums and sealed when not in use.
