S E C 0 R
• Mr Michael Infurna—SJCEHD
January 29, 2003
Page 6
Remediation System Performance Summary
Soil vapor extraction was initiated at the site on September 26, 2002, under Authority to Construct
number N-4613-1-0, issued by the San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (SJVAPCD)
Ozone sparging was initiated at the site on November 20, 2002 Operation and maintenance (O&M)
of the remediation system is performed on a weekly basis A brief description and performance
evaluation of the remedial system between October 10 and December 4, 2002, is presented below
SVE System
The soil vapor extraction (SVE) system is comprised of ten SVE wells (VE-1 through VE-10) and
utilizes a Solleco TCAT 500 scfm catalytic oxidizer as the abatement device During the fourth
quarter 2002, the SVE system was approximately 91% operational, and the SVE system removed
approximately 457 pounds of TPHg, 10 5 pounds of benzene, and 0 pounds of MtBE SVE system
operational and analytical data including hours of operation, applied vacuum, flow rate, ambient
dilution status, field FID, influent TPHg and benzene concentrations, and mass removal data are
presented in Table 5 MtBE removal data is presented in Table 6 A summary of the emissions data
is supplied in Table 7 SVE well data, including open/closed status, vacuum, flow, and FID data are
presented in Table 8 Graphical presentation of TPHg and benzene mass removal and influent
concentration data are shown on Figures 6 and 7 Copies of the O&M field notes are included in
. Attachment 1 Influent and effluent vapor sample laboratory analytical reports are included in
Attachment 2
Ozone Sparging System
An ozone generator, enclosed in a wooden shed, injects ozone into groundwater in 20 ozone sparge
wells (S-1 through S-20) located onsite and offsite A ozone meter installed in the shed will shut
down the remediation system if the sensor detects excessive ozone levels greater than 0 01 ppm
within the shed The ozone injection manifold is set up to inject ozone for 10 minutes at a time into
the sparge wells It can cycle through 10 wells at 100% the maximum injection rate, or all 20 wells
(two wells at a time) at 50% the maximum injection rate With either arrangement, approximately,
2 5 pounds of ozone (total for all wells) is injected into the subsurface each day
After system startup on November 26, 2002, several ozone leaks were detected at the injection
manifold and were repaired O&M has since been performed weekly to record ozone sparge
operational data such as ozone concentrations and hours of operation, and to check leaks at the
ozone injection manifold and the ozone sparge wellheads During the fourth quarter 2002, ozone
was not detected around any ozone sparge well boxes Ozone was detected in the shed housing at
a maximum concentration of 0 41 ppm (December 4, 2002) The source of the leak was found and
repaired Historical operational data including well open/closed status, flow rate, and applied
pressure data are presented in Table 9
Future Work
Future work planned in the first quarter 2003 include the following tasks
• Conduct first quarter 2003 monitoring and sampling event
• Conduct monthly sampling of domestic well DW-1
Perform semi-monthly operation and maintenance of the SVE remediation system
Riverbank-02-40 doc SECOR lntemational Incorporated
