4MOEF5 OE9riERl LOMIA*W3
REPORTING LIMITS FOR BTEX
' The ensuing explanation addresses the difference in reporting limits presented by the
laboratory versus those found in the Tri-Regional Board Staff Recommendations for
preliminary Evaluation and Investigation of Underground Tank Sites dated 10 August 1990
' It is the policy of the laboratory to report an analytical result using a practical quantitation
limit (PQL) or reporting limit (RL) The reporting limit is a laboratory established limit
' of quantitation that will be confidently reported by the laboratory The laboratory's
reporting limit is verified through the lowest point on the calibration curve and is above the
method detection limit (MDL)which is defined according to Appendix B of 40CFR Chapter
' 1, Part 136 - Guidelines Establishing Test Procedures for the Analysis of Pollutants.
Although the laboratory's MDLs are lower than the quantitation limits found in the Tri-
Regional Recommendations, MDLs are obtained under ideal circumstances including
mterferant free matrix and are not representative of "real world" matrices The laboratory,
however, reports organic results below the reporting limit as estimated using a data flag "J"
' All results meet the same qualitative criteria
I
I
1
