' The application of this technology at this site is favorable because the known source of
contamination has essentially been removed by excavating the fuel storage tanks and
approximately 2000 cubic yards of contaminated soils Also, only a minimal amount of free
' product was observed during installation and sampling of groundwater monitor wells. The
geology, hydrogeology, and environmental subsurface conditions of the site are also favorable
for in situ attenuation processes such as biodegradation, chemical reactions with the soil
' materials, and adsorption
Intrinsic remediation is not appropriate where there are imminent risks to human health and the
environment However, this is not the case at this site The site is located in an urban
environment where the existing contamination in the groundwater is under city streets,
sidewalks, or buildings. Underground access is restricted by permit applications through the city
and county The nearest surface water is the Mormon Slough, which is approximately one-half
mile south (upgradient) of the site There is no current groundwater usage within 4,800 feet
downgradient, this is not likely to change in the near future
Because of the potential effectiveness of this technology and the ease of implementability, this
atechnology has been retained for further evaluation
' Table 9 provides a summary of the results of technology screening
Table 9
Results of Technology Screening
Retained or
Technology Eliminated Comments
Pump and Treat Eliminated Requires long remediation periods, difficult to
dispose of treated water, requires relatively
more operation and maintenance effort than
' other technologies
Air Sparging Soil Retained Simple to operate, requires minimal material
Vapor Extraction disposal, effective
' Containment Eliminated
Difficult to install, will cause much
interruption,
In-situ Bioremediation Retained Relatively simple to install compared to other
technologies, no material disposal, minimum
operation and maintenance costs, effective
Intrinsic Retained Relatively simple to install compared to other
Bioremediation technologies, site data indicates its
effectiveness is good, no material disposal,
minimum operation and maintenance costs
•
LIPROJECTS%5ANJOQIHSMACnONEPL 35
