PUBLIC HfALTH SERVIC'rS pOUiry
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION :<
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202 FILE
209/468-3420
PETER LENZ
6465 PACIFIC AVE MAR . 91999
STOCKTON CA 95207
RE: Howard Lenz Property SITE CODE: 2181
1648 Shaw Road
Stockton CA 95207
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD) has recently
reviewed the file for the above referenced site, and the"Preliminary Site Investigation Report"dated
December 30, 1997 that was submitted by Advanced GeoEnviron mental, Inc. (AGE), and has the
following comments for your consideration and action.
On October 3, 1986, two 550-gallon underground storage tanks(UST)were removed under permit and
inspection from the site. Analysis of the soil sample collected from the bottom of the tank pit showed
contamination of total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel (TPHd)of 3000 parts per million (ppm).
On September 18, 1997. AGE oversaw the advancement of five geoprobe soil borings to begin the
investigation of the vertical and lateral extent of the hydrocarbon contamination on site. Soil boring B-1
was advanced to 65 feet below surface grade (bsg) in the apparent former UST excavation area. Soil
borings B-2 through B-5 surrounded boring B-1 to the north, east and south. Soil samples were collected
every five feet and selected samples were analyzed. Results of the analysis indicate that hydrocarbon
contamination in soil, of both TPHd and TPH gas, is most heavily concentrated at levels to 30 feet bsg,
and remains undefined to the west and north. An attempt to obtain a grab water sample from B-1 was not
successful. In their report, AGE recommends further investigation of soils contamination to the north and
west of the former tank pit area, and the initiation of a groundwater investigation combined with feasibility
testing of remediation alternatives.
PHSIEHD agrees with the recommendation of AGE. Please submit to PHS/EHD a work plan for further
site investigation by May 14, 1999.
If you have any questions or comments please call Lori Duncan at(209)468-0337.
Donna Heran, RENS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Llo CA CK t-, —V
Lori Duncan, RENS A
Margaret agorio., REHS
Site Mitigation Unit IV Supervisor, Unit IV
cc: Mark List, CVRWQCB
Bob Marty, AGE
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
