INTERIM REPORT
SOUTHWEST HIDE COMPANY
GROUNDWATER STUDY
January 1, 1988 - July 1, 1988
INTRODUCTION
During the first half of 1988, Moldenhauer Engineering Company (MEC)
continued the groundwater work at Southwest Hide which it began in
mid-1986. MEC wrote a report in early 1988 covering the work completed
in 1987. Since then, five additional groundwater monitoring wells
have been installed at the site, and groundwater monitoring activity
has increased. Attached is a work plan for the second half of 1988.
The plan involves constructing additional groundwater monitoring
wells designed to assist in locating the salt contamination boundaries
and soil borings to identify soil contamination in suspected areas.
The focus of the planned work is three-fold:
1. Determining the integrity (absence of leaks) of the two
lined brine evaporating ponds.
2. Determining the degree of contamination in the soil and
groundwater which occurred in past years from the several
manufacturing firms who occupied the winery site now part
of Southwest Hide' s hide stabilization plant.
3. Providing the additional information necessary under Title
23, Subchapter 15 for updating Southwest Hide Company' s
Waste Discharge Requirements. Although part of this data
has already been submitted, all previously submitted data
and the required additional data will be compiled into a
single, comprehensive report for submission to the California
Regional Water Quality Control Board (C.R.W.Q.C.B. ).
During the past year, a considerable amount of hydrological data
was accumulated and evaluated, and is now assisting MEC' s consultant
in planning future work. Southwest Hide Company' s goal is to complete
the work outlined above in steps 1 and 3 by November 1988. At this
time, it is impossible to estimate the length of time required to
completely identify the extent of soil and groundwater contamination
outlined in step 2.
An interim report covering the next two months of work will be prepared
and sent to the C.R.W.Q.C.B. on September 15, 1988.
1
