Each day, prior to field work, the field geologist conducted a tailgate safety meeting to ensure
proper site safety meeting to ensure proper site safety precautions were identified and also to
conform to the IT site specific health and safety plan
The borings were drilled on February 3, 4, and 5 1993, by representatives from Kvilhaug
Well Drilling and Pump Company, Inc (C-57 license #482390) All drilling was performed
with a steam cleaned, 8 0.1) inch hollow stem auger. Boreholes were drilled to a depth of
50-55 feet below grade to facilitate soil and groundwater sample collection.
2.2 Soil Sampling
' All subsurface materials were described using the visual method of the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS) as described in United States Bureau of Reclamation document
No 5005-86 Boring logs are included in Appendix A Samples were collected utilizing a
split spoon sampler advanced usirig a 140 lb hammer. The sampler contained brass tubes for
collection of undisturbed samples The sampler and brass tubes were decontaminated by
scrubbing with a non-phosphate detergent, triple rinsed with tap water, rinsed with methanol
followed by a distilled water rinse. Soil samples were collected every five feet Select
evadose zone samples were submitted for laboratory analysis in order to provide a vertical
hydrocarbon distribution profile
Each soil sample retained for analysis was described, and promptly sealed with aluminum
foil, plastic end caps and tape The samples were then placed in a "ziploc" bag, sealed with
security tape and hand delivered to the IT Field Analytical Services on-site laboratory
Chain-of-Custody records were maintained for all samples (Appendix B)
The samples were analyzed utilizing the methods and detection limits shown below
1
' DETECTION LLGT
ANALYSIS NAME METHOD (Ppm)
BTEX (benzene, toluene, EPA modified 8020 0.005
ethylbenzene, total xylenes)
TPH as diesel DHS GC-FID 1
' modified 8015
NOTE: TPH = Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons
Copies of signed laboratory reports are presented m Appendix C
' M7103-16.93/ENG/93-0034if 3
