securely stored in the facility basement Soil cuttings, soils generated during the initial hand
augenng phase, and concrete cores removed, were containerized in 55-gallon drums as
generated These drums are stored with those containing equipment decontamination waters,
pending future disposal
2.2 Soil Sampling
All subsurface materials were described using the visual method of the Unified Soil
Classification Systems (USCS) as described in the United States Bureau of Reclamation
Document No 5005-86 Boring logs and well construction diagrams can be found in
Appendix A of this report Samples were collected utilizing a split spoon sampler advanced
using a 140 lb hammer The sampler contained brass tubes for collection of undisturbed
samples The sampler and brass tubes were decontaminated by scrubbing with a non-
phosphate detergent, triple rinsing with tap water, rinsing with methanol followed by a
distilled water rinse Soil samples were collected every two and a half feet beginning at 15
feet below grade (upper 17 5 feet consists of clean imported fill material) All vadose zone
samples collected, were submitted for laboratory analysis in order to provide a vertical
hydrocarbon distribution profile beneath the former tank excavation
Each soil sample was promptly sealed with aluminum foil, plastic end caps and tape The
samples were then placed in a "ziplock" bag, sealed with security tape and delivered to a
DOHS certified laboratory for analysis Chain-of-Custody records were maintained for all
samples (Appendix B)
2.3 Soil Sample Analysis
All soil samples were analyzed by Mc Campbell Analytical Labs in Pacheco, California, for
total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) as diesel and benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and
' xylenes (BTEX) by EPA methods 8015 and 8020 respectively One sample per borehole was
additionally analyzed using the California Waste Extraction Test (WET) for TPH (EPA
method 8015)
One select soil sample only was analyzed by Zalco Laboratories Inc (under subcontract to
Mc Campbell Analytical) for total organic matter using the method defined in the USDA
Handbook #60 One representative sample was tested for grain size distribution using sieve
analysis, by representatives of the Solea Testing group of Concord, California
MZJ09-08-94/UST/94-0142 nbr 5
