21 March 2006 ' AGE-NC Project No 97-0290 ' Page 3 of 15 ' collected from the second excavation Field observations Indicated that petroleum-hydrocarbons were present In soil samples collected from the excavation Laboratory analyses of the soil samples were not available to AGE 26 PRELIMINARY SITE ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES ' The following is a summary of site assessment field activities conducted at the site to date Analytical data Is summarized in the tables Included in this report In November 1989, one soil boring was advanced to a depth of 40 feet bsg Hydrocarbon odor was noted in the boring,however, analysis of soil samples was not performed Drilling was aborted and ' the boring was backfilled to surface grade with grout On 12 October 1998,three soil probe borings were advanced at the site using AGE's Geoprobe 5400 ' direct-push probing unit equipped with 125-Inch diameter rods and a 2 15-Inch diameter soil sampling assembly Boring P1 was advanced to a depth of 15 feet bsg, where probing refusal was encountered,soil samples were collected at depths of 10 feet and 15 feet bsg Boring P2 and P3 were advanced to a vertical depth of 50 feet bsg, soil samples were collected at 5-foot intervals,beginning at a depth of 10 feet bsg in boring P2 and at 15 feet bsg in boring P3 Boring locations are shown on ' Figure 2, analytical results of soil samples are summarized in Table 1 In November and December 1998 and in January 1999,twelve soil borings were advanced at the site I Borings MW1 through MW8 and borings B4 through B7 were advanced with hollow stem augers to a depth of 60 feet bsg Soil and grab ground water samples were collected from borings B4 through B7, organic vapor was not detected in soil samples collected from borings MW3, MWS, MW6, MW7, MW8, or B5 Borings MW1 through MW8 were completed as ground water monitoring wells using 2-inch diameter polyvinylchloride (PVC) casing with 0 020-inch slotted screen installed from 60 feet to 40 feet bsg and blank casing extended to the surface Analytical results of soil and all ground water samples are summarized in Tables 1 and 2, respectively • Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline(TPH-g)was detected at concentrations I as high as 11,000 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) in 26 of the 47 soil samples analyzed, benzene was detected in 15 of the 47 samples analyzed Petroleum hydrocarbons were not detected in soil samples analyzed from borings MW1, MW3, MW5, MWS, and B5 Oxygenates were not detected in the 13 samples analyzed by EPA Method 8260 The approximate extent of impacted soil prior to on-site remediation is illustrated on Figure 3 I • The permeability of samples 134-25, MW1-30, and MW3-55 was measured at 2 2 x 10' centimeters per second (cm/s), 3 5 x 10"3 cm/s, and 3 3 x 10` cm/s, respectively (Appendix A) Porosity ranged from 32 26 percent to 41 16 percent Specific gravity ranged Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc I
