SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION PILOT TEST
On 13 May 1999, an 8-hour soil vapor extraction test (SVE pilot test) was conducted at the site,
' concurrent with the air spargmg test The SVE pilot test was performed to provide vapor extraction
data for feasibility analysis of the remediation method and for proper design of the remediation
Isystem
41 SOIL VAPOR EXTRACTION SYSTEM
The test was conducted using a vapor extraction system (VES), VACLEEN IOOOG, manufactured
by Environmental Techniques The VES consists of a positive-displacement blower, driven by an
internal combustion (IC) engine The Inlet of the VES was connected to a vadose-zone well The
vacuum applied to the well caused hydrocarbons in the soil to volatilize and flow through the
vacuum pump to the IC engine The induced vacuum was measured at surrounding monitoring
points using Magnehellc vacuum gauges
' The extracted hydrocarbon vapor was destroyed in the IC engine as part of the internal combustion
process Emissions from the engine were routed through two catalytic converters to maximize the
destruction rate of hydrocarbon vapor
I42 PILOT TEST PROCEDURES
Wells MW 1, MW2,V W 1 A,V W 1 C and six vapor monitoring points(Installed with S W 1 and S W2)
Iwere fitted with air-tight well caps, valves and tubing for monitoring pressure/vacuum In each well,
as described for the sparging test (Section 3 1) Vapor extraction was performed from VW 1 B for the
first 4 hours of the pilot test Extraction was switched to V W I A for approximately 30 minutes
IHowever, due to low flow rates and high vacuum, extraction was switched back to VW I B for the
• remainder of the test
I
Advanced GeoEn-wournental,Inc
