Fresh Start Bakeries -Subsurface .3oil Assessment Work Plan July 18, 1994
Law/Crandall Project 2703.40538.0031 . Final
2.4 SOIL SAMPLING
2.4.1 Soil Boring Construction
An estimate of 8 soil borings from 10 to 30 feet to be drilled at the subject site. The estimated
locations of the borings are as follows:
0 Six 10 to 15-foot deep borings at the influent and effluent ports of
each of the three operating clarifiers.
• Two 15 to 30-foot deep borings located in the septic system leach
field.
• Three hand auger borings located within the facility along hydraulic fluid
pipeline.
• Zero to three hand auger borings in areas of visible staining, if any.
The borings are anticipated to be drilled to a maximum depth of 30 feet with a 6 3/4-inch diameter
hollow stem auger. On completion of drilling and sampling, the borings will be backfilled with
neat cement grout (with 0-5% bentonite powder) and the surface locations restored to match the
existing surface.
2.4.2 Soil Sampling Procedures
Undisturbed soil samples will be taken at 1.5- or 5-foot intervals in the borings. The samples will
be acquired with a split-spoon sampler or hand sampler driven ahead of the augers. The samples
will be retained in clean, brass sleeves that will be capped with Teflon-lined plastic caps, labeled,
and placed into a chilled ice chest. Duplicate soil samples will be field screened for the presence
of volatile organic vapors using a photoionization detector (PID).
The samples will be collected and logged by one of our field geologist/scientists who will be
working under the supervision of a California Registered Geologist.
The samples will be stored in an insulated ice chest until transportation to a state-certified laboratory
5
