WELL INSTALLATION
On 19 March 2008, two pilot borings were advanced on-site for the installation of ground water
monitoring wells MW-6 and MW-7. The monitoring well locations are shown on Figure 2.
3.1.1. Drilling and Soil Sampling
Pilot borings for wells MW-6 and MW-7; were advanced to 30 feet below surface grade (bsg)
utilizing a CME-75 rig equipped with 8.25-inch hollow stem augers. The drill rig and the three-man
crew were supplied by All Well Abandoment, Placerville, California.
Soil samples were collected ahead of the drill bit using a California modified split-spoon sampler
loaded with three pre-cleaned 2-inch by 6-inch stainless steel sleeves . The samples were collected
from the pilot boring at 5-foot intervals, beginning at 5 feet bsg.
After sample recovery, both ends of the second sample sleeve were covered with Teflon sheets,
capped, and sealed with tape. The samples were then labeled, stored on ice, and transported under
chain of custody to Cal Tech Environmental Laboratory(CTEL), a State of California Department
of Public Health (CDPH)-certified analytical laboratory. Selected samples were analyzed for the
following constituents:
I
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline (TPH-g) in accordance with EPA
Method 8015 Modified and
• Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes(BTEX)and fuel additives methyl tertiary-
butyl ether(MTBE),tertiary-butyl alcohol(TBA), di-isopropyl ether(DIPS),ethyl tertiary-
butyl ether(ETBE),tertiary-amyl methyl ether(TAME), 1,2-dichloroethane(1,2-DCA),and
1,2-dibromoethane (EDB) in accordance with EPA Method 8260B.
All augers were pressure cleaned prior to use to avoid cross-contamination.The sampling equipment
was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed with water.Auger returns generated by drilling were
containerized in a Department of Transportation (DOT) model 17H 55-gallon drums, temporarily
stored on-site until proper disposal was arranged.
3.1.2. Soil Logging
After sample preservation, soil was extruded from the remaining sleeves and field-screened utilizing
an organic vapor meter(OVM)equipped with a photo ionization detection(PID)meter. The soil also
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
I
