c.
APPENDIX A
PROCEDURES FOR SOIL SAMPLING AND HEADSPACE MEASUREMENTS
Soil Sampling
a Relatively undisturbed soil samples were collected with a 24-inch long piston soil sampler
lined with 1.0-inch diameter vinyl acetate tubing. During each sampling event, the sampler
was driven a total of approximately 24 inches with a 110-foot pound hydraulic hammer.
• An undisturbed section of the filled vinyl acetate tube was removed and capped on each end
with TEFLON® sheeting and polyethylene endcaps. The endcaps were then secured with
duct tape.
• The top of each collected sample was labeled with the sample number, date, project number;
and then placed in an ice chest maintained at 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Soil samples were then delivered to a State of California, Department of Health Services
certified laboratory under strict chain-of-custody procedures.
All soil sampling equipment was steam cleaned between 'sampling events.
'r AaacQ Measurements
G Soil from the sampling tube of each driven sampler was extracted for headspace analysis
directly into a brass tube. The tube was filled approximately one fifth with soil and secured
with end-caps.
i
The soil in the tube was dis-aggregated by shaking, end then allowed to sit for approximately
3 to 5 minutes, at which time the probe of a field organic vapor meter (OVM) was inserted
Through a covered hole In the endcap, and a headspace measurement taken and recorded.
The OVM used during the project was a RAE SYSTEMS;' INC., MiniRAE Plus Classic, Model
no. PGM-7815, equipped with a photo-ionization detector calibrated to 100 ppmv of
isobutylene.
I
The brass tube and endcaps were washed between each headspace measurement with a
solution of water and LIQUINOX®(a phosphate free detergent), rinsed with potable tap water,
rinsed again with de-ionized water, and then air-dried.
Proj. No.: 04483-01 QEM
