The sample water was
immediately transferred by gently pouring the contents of the bailer into
clean volatile organic analysis (VOA) vials, filling each completely. Care
was taken to minimize any agitation of the water sample. The sample vial
was then capped with a Teflon septum cap such that zero headspace was
achieved, and no air bubbles were visible when turned upside-down.
Additional sample water was transferred into a 1-liter umber glass
container. The sample containers (VOA vials and 1-liter amber glass) were
labeled with the well number, date, time, sampler's initials, location, and
analysis required, and stored on ice in a cooler for delivery to the laboratory.
Each sample was logged onto a chain-of custody form (See Attachment 1).
All purge water from the development of the wells was placed in a 55-gallon
drum pending the results of the groundwater analyses.
The water samples were analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons by
EPA Method 8015 modified and Benzene, Toluene, Xylenes, and
Ethylbenzene by EPA Method 602. Methods of preparation and analysis of
water samples are summarized in Table 3 along with target detection
limits.
All sample analyses were performed by Anlab Analytical Laboratory, a
State-of-California-certified laboratory which maintains well-established
and documented quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) programs.
Anlab strictly adheres to Section 10 ("Quality Control/Quality Assurance")
of "Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste" (EPA Manual 60014-79-019,
March 1979). Sections of these two documents involving the QA/QC aspects
of sample collection, preservation, and sample handling are also followed
by ERM-West.
Results of water analyses are summarized in Table 4. Original laboratory
reports appear in Attachment 2. No water samples had any detectable
concentrations of TPH or BTX&E.
