EXPOSURE ROUTE (PATHWAY): The course a chemical or physical agent takes from a
source to an exposed organism.
EXPOSURE SCENARIO: A characterization of the behavior, lifestyle, and activities of the
potentially exposed population to be evaluated.
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION: A qualitative assessment containing a review of biological and
chemical information used to determine whether exposure to a chemical or agent may pose a
hazard or increase in the incidence of an adverse health condition or effect (e g, cancer)
HAZARD: The inherent ability of a chemical or agent to cause harm
INDICATOR CHEMICAL: Chemicals that are site-related and whose data are of sufficient
quality for use in the quantitative risk assessment
INGESTION EXPOSURE: Contact with chemicals from ingestion of food, liquid, or
particulates
INHALATION EXPOSURE: Contact with chemical vapors or particulate matter which is
inhaled via the nose or mouth into the respiratory system
INTAKE: The quantity of the chemical that enters the body through all routes of exposure
LIFETIME AVERAGE DAILY DOSE (LADD): The dose of a chemical ingested or absorbed
on a daily basis and averaged over a seventy year lifetime
LOAEL: Lowest observable adverse health effect level - The amount of chemical that, when
absorbed by the body, is known to create adverse health effects
MEAN: The numerical value obtained by dividing the sum of a set of observations by the
number of individual observations
MEDIAN: That value above which and below which half of the population in the set lies, ex
1,2,5,617 -- 5 is the median value
NOAEL: No observable adverse effect level - The smallest amount of chemical that, when
absorbed by the body, is not expected to create adverse health effects
NONCARCINOGEN: A chemical or substance which is not considered to cause cancer
PARTITION COEFFICIENT: The ratio of the solubility of a substance in organic solvents to
its solubility to water.
G 00071MANPAFE FNL1kmo 26 93 CbcmRuk* 1993
