2.0 SITE CHARACTERIZATION <br /> This section briefly reviews the site setting and conditions that are relevant to the risk <br /> assessment. Subsection 2.1 presents a brief background of the Santa Fe Railway Company <br /> Site and the surrounding area. Subsection 2.2 presents the geologic and hydrogeologic <br /> characteristics of the site. A summary of previous investigations is presented in Subsection <br /> 2.3, followed by a description of the area evaluated in this report in Subsection 2 4 <br /> 2.1 Site Background <br /> The site is located at 1033 East Scotts Avenue in Stockton, California (FIGURE 2-1) In <br /> 1985, the Santa Fe Railway Company purchased the site to develop a connection track <br /> between two perpendicular tracks Predevelopment activities included the discovery and <br /> removal of an underground vault and three underground, steel, single-walled tanks (Tanks <br /> #1, #2, and #3) During the vault/tank removal, petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soils <br /> were found beneath Tanks #1 and #2 (ERM-West, 1989) <br /> 2.2 Site Geology/Hydrology <br /> The site is located in alluvial deposits characteristic of the San Joaquin River Delta The <br /> geologic units beneath the site consist of unconsolidated alluvial deposits underlain at depth <br /> by consolidated sedimentary deposits and intrusive and extrusive igneous bedrock The <br /> topography is relatively flat with an approximate elevation of 18 feet above mean sea level <br /> As reported by ERM West (ERM-West, 1991a), groundwater is located approximately 55 <br /> feet below ground surface (bgs) The direction of groundwater flow is presently in a <br /> general southward direction Prior to the recent heavy rain season, the direction of <br /> groundwater flow was in a general northward direction with a gradient of O.003 Surficial <br /> water flows intermittently in the area and is limited to the Mormon Slough The Mormon <br /> Slough flows in a general east to west direction nearly 1/4 mile south of the site and flows <br /> into the Stockton Deep Water Channel approximately one mile northwest of the site <br /> G ti060U MAWAFE FNLUm&105 26 93 2-1 Chendtme 1993 <br />
