2.4 Selection of Study Area
This subsection presents the selection and description of the portions of the site (study area)
evaluated in this risk assessment The purpose of selecting a study area is to focus the risk
assessment on the major potential source of environmental impacts posed by site conditions
The study area selected for evaluation in this risk assessment was based on the nature and
extent of petroleum hydrocarbons in soil characterized in the site investigations As
previously discussed in Subsection 2 3, petroleum hydrocarbons were detected at various
concentrations throughout the former tank/vault area The extent of impacted soil appears
to be limited to the uppermost 35-40 feet, with the highest concentrations of 7400 ppm
detected in boring B-5 at 12 feet bgs
The study area selected for evaluation in this risk assessment is the entire former tank/vault
area The northern and southern boundaries of this area were delineated by sampling
locations at which petroleum hydrocarbons were nondetectable. Delineation of the western
and eastern boundaries was based on the maximum lateral distance that could reasonably
be expected to contain petroleum hydrocarbons This area consists of approximately 127
square meters FIGURE 2-3 presents the study area evaluated in this report
mANrAFE FNL%kw)03 26 93 2-13 cam&wN IM
