Soil File
The data in this file is used in SESOIL to estimate the rate of movement of water and
chemicals in the soil matrix Input parameters required for this file include effective
porosity, bulk density, intrinsic permeability, soil disconnectedness, organic carbon content,
Freundlich exponent, and cation exchange rate.
Soil samples were collected by McLaren/Hart geologists from soil borings that were taken
from the site in December, 1992 The samples were subsequently analyzed for physical and
chemical properties to obtain an accurate assessment of site-specific soil conditions These
properties include bulk density, total organic carbon, hydraulic conductivity, and porosity
The soil disconnectedness and the effective porosity were used to calibrate the moisture
content determined from the soil sample This procedure ensures an accurate water balance
in the system The soil file parameters are presented in TABLE 4-3.
Chemical File
Chemical parameters are used in SESOIL to estimate the migration and transformation of
the chemicals in the soil matrix The petroleum hydrocarbons were conservatively
represented by the constituent, tetradecane Chemical and physical properties for
tetradecane were estimated by using the PCCHEM chemical estimation program (USEPA,
1990) This program estimates properties of a chemical based on its chemical structure and
its organic-carbon partition coefficient In addition, in order to maintain a conservative
approach to the modeling, the rate of biodegradation of tetradecane (and therefore,
petroleum hydrocarbons) in the soil was assumed to be zero Chemical parameters used in
this assessment are presented in TABLE 4-4
G'OB007IMM?'AFE FxL%kmM 26 93 4-13 ch=Rwe' ,993
