(bsg) Field screening indicted soil impacted with hydrocarbons from 20 feet bgs to
groundwater, however, the garage, located at the site, precluded relocation of the
boring in a southerly direction
In order to obtain information on soil conditions and contaminant migration south of the
garage, boring TH-2 was relocated from the proposed location east of the former tank
cluster to a site about 43 feet southeast of TH-1 Relocation of TH-2 permitted
assessment of the lateral extent of hydrocarbons to the south and east of the former
tank cluster
5 0 SOIL BORINGS
This section describes the methods used to advance, field screen, and sample the
eight (8) soil borings, followed by a discussion of the analytical results
51 Boring and Abandonment Methods
The soil borings were advanced by Sods Engineering, Inc. (SEI) using a CME-75 rig
with an eight (8)-inch outer diameter hollow stem continuous flight auger in
accordance with ASTM Method D1452-80 for soil investigations and sampling by
auger bonngs The augers were steam cleaned prior to drilling each boring
Soil cuttings were placed in 55 gallon DOT approved drums with bolt-on lids and
moved to a remote portion of the property for storage The boreholes were backfilled
with a bentonite plug and a 6-sack cement slurry The cement slurry was trammed into
each boring from the bottom to the top to prevent caving
52 Soil Sampling
Soil samples were collected through the hollow-stem augers in two and one half (2
112) inch diameter brass sleeves contained in a split-spoon sampler The sampler is
advanced into undisturbed soil by a 140-pound hammer, dropped 30-inches in
accordance with ASTM methods D1586-84 for split-barrel sampling of soil and D1587-
83 for thin-walled tube sampling of sods The brass sleeves and sampler were
cleaned with Alconox and rinsed in deionized water prior to each use
Soil samples from the borings were collected at five foot intervals, beginning at 10 feet
(bsg) The blow counts, recovery, and lithology were recorded on field boring logs
The hthology was described in accordance with the Unified Sods Classification
System and ASTM procedure D2488-84 for visual description and identificat:on of
sods under the direct supervision of David Crane, California State Registered
Geologist #4639
7 of 17
