MURRAY & ASSOC1ATE6
= ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES
April 7, 1992
RECEivEM&
JAN 2 7 @§1 V
ENVlRONI Vqt
qfAlttp
Mr. James M. Langston Phitoi `g-0L RYiPk§
P.O. Box 97
Lathrop, CA 95330
RE: Environmental Investigation - Langston's Market, 15615 Seventh Street, Lathrop,
California
Dear Mr. Langston:
This letter report summarizes our work for the subsurface investigation at the subject site,
and presents the results of all on-site drilling and sample collection. The investigation was
initiated as a result of til,e failure of a 4,000-gallon underground fuel tank in March, 1991
which occurred following a helium pressure test. Approximately 1,200 gallons of leaded
gasoline was lost from the tank. The purpose of this work was twofold: First, to
determine the areal and vertical extent of gasoline contamination in the soil, and whether
groundwater quality has been impacted by the gasoline; and second, if groundwater quality
has been impacted, how far has the contaminant plume migrated. Shallow groundwater
at the site is encountered at a depth of 17.5 feet.
To accomplish these goals, a series of borings were drilled and samples collected at 9, 14
and 17 feet. A 580B photoionization detector (PID) calibrated for benzene was used to
screen the soil samples in the field. No samples were submitted for chemical analysis.
FIELD ACTIVITIES AND OBSERVATIONS
Soil Borings
A Vicinity Map showing the site location is presented in Figure 1. A Site Plan showing
the boring locations is presented in Figure 2. Exploratory borings 1 through 8 were drilled
to a depth of 17 feet. Auger cuttings were analyzed on-site by using a PID. Results of
the PID readings are presented in Table 1.
The soil borings were drilled using a hand-held rotary hammer equipped with 2-inch
diameter continuous flight solid stem auger equipment. All augers were steam-cleaned
prior to use to minimize the potential for cross-contamination.
5051 Lexington Circle, Loomis, CA 95650 (916) 652-0458 • FAX (916) 652-0464
