' 28 May 1991
GeoAudit CV 4304 . 1. 1 - Work Plan for Vacuum Extraction
Page 4 of 10
1
(GTT Project no. 202/799-5005. 01, report dated 21 November 1988) .
The recovery of free-floating product, using a bailer, was
performed by a representative of Genova Bakery. Due to severe
drought conditions, the wells at the subject sites became dry. It
' is our understanding that no additional assessment and/or
mitigation attempts have been conducted since then.
on 21 March 1991, a work plan was submitted by GeoAudit to the
' SJEHD to install a vacuum extraction well to a depth of
approximately 70 feet. The well is designed to facilitate vapor
removal from practically the entire well depth. An approval to
install the extraction well in the location of the former tank has
been granted by the SJEHD.
1. 5. ASSUMPTIONS
Typically, the lateral extent of hydrocarbon contamination plumes
from a single point source in a soil type, such as that of the
subject site, does not exceed 25 feet in diameter. A limited soil-
gas survey will be conducted to estimate the lateral extent of the
' impacted area (see Section 9 . 4) . The current depth to ground water
is assumed to be 65 feet, which concurrently represents the maximum
vertical extent of the plume. Approximately 1., 200 cubic yards of
contaminated soil exists at the site.
Based upon the existing analytical results, the average level of
the hydrocarbon contaminants is calculated as follows:
' Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) 5, 780 mg/kg
Benzene 168 mg/kg
Toluene 615 mg/kg
Ethylbenzene 139 mg/kg
Total Xylenes 779 mg/kg
Based upon total volume of contaminated soil and the average
contamination level, approximately 18, 500 lbs or 3 , 000 gallons of
' gasoline total gasoline were released.
Please note that the figures used here are liberally calculated.
The actual volume of contaminated soils, the average level of
contamination and subsequently the total volume of product released
are likely to be less than presented here.
