Oxy Claims
(Continued From Page A-1)
conclusions drawn by Occidental
on their• Plan of Study due to
litigation pending by the state
against the firm. The state has
filed a $45 million pollution suit
against the company about a
year ago. The Environmental
Protection Agency in San
Francisco stated that their• copy
of the r•epor•t would be sent to
their• headquarters in
Washington, D.C.
According to Rice the study
comprised of over• 50,000
separate analyses performed by
three independent laboratories
on more than 500 samples of
domestic well water•, 200 sam-
ples of monitoring (test) well
water• and 125 samples of soil
cor•ings.
During the study domestic and
monitoring wells were also
tested for• inorganic chemicals,
such as chloride and radioactive
materials. Rice reported that
relatively small amounts of
radioactive materials were
found in the vicinity of the
Lathrop plant, with no iden-
tit;'iable concentration patterns
a round the site.
He cited technical consultants,
who r•epor•tedly studied the
radiation issue, as believing that
a significant portion of the
radioactive material detected in
the groundwater• came from
natural sources unrelated to
Occidental's operations due to
location and groundwater•
movement in the area, which
was found to travel north and
northwest. According to these
experts, stated Rice, the
radioactive materials detected
did not represent a health hazard
to consumers of water•.
The Plan of Study is the first of
three phases planned by Oc-
cidental, informed Rice. The
next phase of the investigation
will include the continuation of
the groundwater• monitoring
program and evaluation of
proposed remedial measures
aimed at reducing or eliminating
any potential effects of chemical
residues found in the soil or -
groundwater.
The final phase will establish a
