Item No. 1
PC : 10-8-87
SA-88-7
Page 4
evisceration. The meat must be removed from the premises by
the owner(s) of the livestock or chilled and processed at
another facility, such as a locker plant .
Custom slaughterhouses must receive a license from the State
Department of Food and Agriculture . A licensed livestock meat
inspector must be on the premises when the facility is in
operation. It is the livestock meat inspector ' s responsibility
to ensure that the processing and labeling of products meet
State requirements. The meat inspector may be an employee of
the custom slaughterhouse.
The State requires that a log be kept that documents all ani-
mals killed at the facility. A copy of the log entries is sent
to the State Department of Food and Agriculture on a monthly
basis .
Odor :
If operated in a proper manner , the slaughterhouse is not
expected to create odor problems for adjacent properties . The
waste water from the washdown of the facilities must pass
through a 1600-gallon grease trap prior to reaching the open
evaporation pond on the project site . The grease trap will
catch and retain the animal waste that could cause objec-
tionable odors . The material from the grease trap will be
routinely removed by a tallow company.
The Department of Public Works notes that a portion of the site
is located within a flood hazard area, and the entire site is
subject to shallow sheet-flow flooding of approximately one
foot in depth. As a result , it will be necessary to bank the
evaporation pond three feet higher than the 100-year flood
depth.
FACILITIES/SERVICES :
The custom slaughterhouse proposes to utilize an existing private
well for water supply and a septic system for sewage disposal .
The Local Health District is requiring a cross-connection control
device on the water well to protect it against contamination and
back-siphonage . In addition, a new septic system, isolated the
proper distance from the water supply, will be required.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS :
An Initial Study was prepared on August 12 , 1987 . Any poten-
tially significant effects are mitigated via the proposed site
