t
excavating. Mr. Steven Sasson for the SJPHS/EHD gave his approval for additional
excavation without the need to submit an addendum to the original work plan.
MOST RECENT WORK 6110194
On May 6, 1994, Thorpe Oil, Inc. returned to the site and did additional excavating and
soil sampling on the northwest corner and southeast portions of the excavation, PLATE X.
Soil sampling locations were at the direction of Mr. Steve Sasson from the SJPHS/EHD. '
The soil samples, collected by Charles Fry (H&A), were taken from the bucket of the
backhoe, properly packaged, preserved on ice, and delivered by chain of custody to FGL
for analysis of TPH-Diesel using EPA method 8015M. Refer to EXHIBIT C, PLATE X,
and TABLE 2 for details.
The northwest corner of the pit was excavated an additional 7 feet to the north, 8 feet to
the east, and dug to a depth of 11 feet attempting to remove the diesel contamination that
was reported by the laboratory from the excavating and sampling done on May 9 and 10,
1394.• Soil sample PE11NW was then taken at a depth of 11 feet from the center of the
north wall of the new excavation.
The southeastern portion of the excavation was dug an additional 15 feet to the east, 18
feet to the north, and carried to a depth of 11 feet where layered cement material was
L encountered, making further digging very difficult. The area surrounding soil sample
PE10SE was dug out to a depth of 21 feet before the sample was collected. This soil
sample came from the base of the excavation and would,be at approximately the same {
Clocation where soil sample PE3SE at a depth of 20 feet was obtained on May 10, 1994,
and reported to contain 8200 ppm diesel. Soil sample PE13SE taken at a depth of 11'
came from the base of the excavation near the southeast corner. Soil sample PL12S came
from the base of the product line trench which had been dug deeper to a depth of 11 feet
and extended 15 feet to the east. Samples PEI INW, PL12S, and PE13SE were taken in
the fill material. Sample PE10SE was from the native clay. Further excavating to the
south and east was restricted by underground electrical lines.
LABORATORY.RESULTS 6110194
The four (4) collected soil samples were delivered by chain of custody to FGL and 3
analyzed for TPH-Diesel. All the samples except for PL12S were reported as non detect
for diesel. Sample PL12S, from the product line, was reported to contain 170 ppm diesel.
i
It was noted that sample.PE13SE had a peak pattern that was not typical of diesel, but
may contain waste oil or heavier fuel. It was apparent while excavating that the area
contained scattered and abundant amounts of asphaltic debris in the fill material.
6
