ANALYTICAL METHODOLOGY
Ethylene Dibromide (EDB) by Extraction and GC/ECD
40 ml Extraction --
A weighed amount of NaCl is added to a 50 ml round bottom flask. The
sample is poured from the 40 ml vial into the flask and swirled until the
NaCl is dissolved. 2.0 mis of QC'ed hexane 3.s added to the sample and
shaken for 2-5 minutes. Distilled water is added to the flask so the hexane
layer is completely within the neck of the flask. The hexane layer is
transferred into auto--sampler vials. An aliquot of the extract is in]ected
into a GC equipped with an electron capture detector (ECD) and packed
colu mn.
1000 ml (liter) Extraction --
In a reparatory funnel, one litter of sa mple and 10 ml of hexane are
combined and shaken vigorously for ten minutes. The solvent and water
phases are allowed to separate, and then the hexane layer is transferred to
a screw cap vial along with a small amount of sodium sulfate. An aliquot
of the extract is infected into a GC equipped with an electron
capture detector and a packed column.
