1
KLEINEELDER
MAR 161989
March 6, 1989 EWIRONMEWAL HEALTH
File: 24-I119-10 PERW ISERVICES
Mr. Walt Nichols
City of Stockton '
Department of Public Works, Room 317
425 North El Dorado fZerooi z
Stockton, CA 95202
SUBJECT: Sampling Results
1321 South Sutter
Stockton, California
Dear Mr. Nichols:
Enclosed are the analytical results for the soil samples collected from the excavation of a
t160 12,000 gallon storage tank located at 134 South Sutter Street, Stockton, California, (Plate 1,
Site Location Map). A sample was obtained from beneath each end of the tank and
submitted for chemical analysis.
Previous Activities
The tank was uncovered during excavation activities associated with new construction at
the site. The location of the underground storage tank is shown on Plate 2, Sample
Location Map. As the original contents of the tank were unknown and a residual liquid
was found in the tank, a sample of the liquid was obtained by a Kleinfelder geologist on
February 10, 1989. The analytical results indicated that the liquid sample was 46 percent
diesel by weight. The rest of the sample was composed primarily of water. Refer to
Kleinfelder project report dated February 17, 1989, for results of the liquid sample.
SamplingEvent
On February 23, 1989, the tank was emptied of its contents and removed from the
excavation. Backfill material and a sma:l amount of stained soil was scraped from the
bottom of the excavation with a backhoe. Approximately 2 feet below each end of the tank
bottom, a sample of native soil was obtained by a Kleinfelder geologist from the backhoe
bucket. Soil samples were obtained by scraping away about 4 inches of the soil in the
backhoe bucket with a hand trowel, then driving a clean brass tube into the native soil.
Sample tubes were decontaminated prior to sampling by washing in a solution of trisodium
phosphate (TSP), followed by a died led water rinse. Each tube was retracted, capped with
Teflon sheeting and tightly fitting plastic end caps. Samples were labeled, logged on a
chain-of-custody and stored on ice until delivery to California Analytical
Laboratories/Enseco in West Sacramento, California. A representative from the San
Joaquin Local Health District (SJLHD), Ms. Kaley Foley, was present throughout the
sampling process.
k1' clFFI F)FR 9795 Businevs Park: Drive. 1'ite C.
