Scope of Work
Shell Due Diligence
June 16,2008
Phase H ESA Pre-Field and Field Activities:
• A desktop review will be conducted to determine if the facility was formerly an
automotive service/repair center.
• Borings to be cleared following the Shell ES Subsurface Investigation Procedure.
• An average of 8 borings to be completed per site based on various lithologies using either
probe or hollow-stem drilling techniques:
0 4 borings around the USTs to be drilled to 40' below ground surface (bgs) or
groundwater,whichever is encountered fust
0 4 borings near the dispensers to be drilled to 20' bgs or groundwater, whichever
is encountered first
o 1 boring near any waste oil tank to be drilled to 20' bgs or groundwater,
whichever is encountered first
• Boring locations to be approved by the Shell PM. The actual number of borings is only
approximate.
• Soil samples will be collected on a continuous basis from the hole-clearance depth to the
total depth of the boring.
• The characteristics of each soil sample will be recorded/described using the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS) and field-screened for the presence of volatile organic
vapors using a photo-ionization detector (PID). All descriptions, organic vapor
measurements, and other pertinent information will be recorded on boring logs.
• One soil sample will be submitted for laboratory analysis from each boring: either the
sample with the highest PID reading or the sample just prior to the soil-water interface.
If all PID readings are ND, submit the sample from bottom of boring for laboratory
analysis.
• No groundwater monitoring wells to be installed; groundwater grab samples only if
groundwater is encountered.
• Contractor will be responsible for the strict adherence to the release reporting and
response procedures in California(if applicable). Documentation of release reporting and
Shell's response will need to be included in Phase II report.
• No off-site drilling unless approved by the Shell PM.
• All soil samples collected from the borings will be analyzed for chlorinated volatile
organic compounds (VOCs) including Fuel additives (EDB and EDC) and Oxygenates
(MTBE, TBA, DIPE, ETBE, TAME and ethanol) by Method 8260B and TPH-G by
Method 8015M. In addition, if a diesel UST is present then soil samples will be collected
and analyzed for TPH-D by Method 8015M. If the soil samples are associated with a
waste oil USTs then the soil samples will be analyzed for chlorinated VOCs including
Oxygenates(MTBE, TBA,DIPE, ETBE, and TAME), and lead scavengers 1,2-DCA and
EDB by Method 8260B, CAM 5 metals by Method 6010, PNAs and creosote by Method
8270, PCBs by Method 8082, and TPH-D, TPH-G, BTEX, oil and grease by Method
8015M.
• If groundwater is encountered then all groundwater samples collected from the borings
will be analyzed for BTEX and VOCs (including fuel additives and oxygenates listed
above) by Method 8260B, and TPH-G by Method 8015M. In addition, if a diesel UST is
present then groundwater samples will be collected and analyzed for TPH-D by Method
8015M. If the gruondwater samples are associated with a waste oil USTs then the
groundwater samples will be analyzed for chlorinated VOCs including Oxygenates
