' k%j KLEINFELDER
' Monterey sand to approximately 2 feet above the top of the perforated
section. The sand size selected will be compatible with the PVC slot size.
o A 3-foot bentonite plug will be placed above the sand pack to provide a seal
against surface water infiltration.
o The remaining annular space will be filled with cement/bentonite grout to
the surface.
' o Each well will be secured inside a locking well cover.
' 3.3 MONITORING WELL DEVELOPMENT AND SAMPLING
All three monitoring wells will be developed after installation. Each well will be first
' sampled with a clear acrylic bailer to visually inspect the sample for a product layer or
sheen. If no product layer or sheen is observed on the water samples, the wells will be
' developed with a surge-block, air-lift tool, and/or bailer. Surging along the screened
interval of the well will draw the sediment from the formation into and out of the well and
' set the sand pack. The sediment-laden water will be air-lifted from the well at a rate of
approximately 0.50 gallons per minute (gpm). Each well will be developed until the
' discharge water runs relatively clear of fines. Approximately 5 to 10 well volumes will be
removed from each monitoring well. Water removed from the wells during development
will be containerized in DOT approved 55-gallon barrels and stored on the site pending
' results of water analyses.
' After the wells have been developed, the aquifer will be allowed to equilibrate. The wells
will then be purged and sampled. During purging, field parameters (pH, conductivity, and
' temperature) will be monitored to provide indications of the stabilization of the purge
water. When the field parameters have stabilized, it is assumed that the water is
representative of water in the formation. Samples will be collected after the field
parameters have stabilized (normally requiring the removal of 5 well volumes). After
' collecting a sample, the sample bottles will be immediately sealed, labeled and placed in an
iced cooler. At the end of the field day, the water samples will be delivered under chain-of-
custody to a state/EPA certified analytical laboratory.
129-88-1378 5
