Subcontractor Responsibilities
All subcontractors are responsible for their own health and safety program and the health
and safety of their own employees. This requirement is based on Occupational Safety and Health
Administration (OSHA) regulations, which recognize the employer-to-employee responsibility for
health and safety. A copy of their written program must be submitted for review to BC, if
requested. In an effort to assist the subcontractors, and to comply with hazard communication
requirements, BC will provide a copy of the site safety and health plan for this project to each
subcontractor for implementation for the subcontractor's employees.
HAZARD ANALYSIS
The potential hazards to personnel working at the project site have been classified as
chemical hazards, physical safety hazards, noise, and heat stress. Each potential hazard relative to
the potential for exposure is described below.
Chemical Contamination
Health hazards associated with potential chemical exposures includes toxicity. Toxicity
may occur following inhalation of chemical vapors that could potentially be released from affected
soil or groundwater, and direct contact with soil and/or groundwater that could potentially contain
hazardous materials. The exposure limit for chloroform is 2 parts per million (ppm) as an 8-hour
time-weighted average airborne concentration.
Chloroform is potential occupational carcinogen. Acute exposure can lead to dizziness,
disorientation, nausea, headache, and eye and skin irritation. Chronic chloroform exposure targets
liver, kidney, heart, eyes, and skin. The material safety data sheet (MSDS) for chloroform is
included as Attachment 1.
Table 1 presents a summary of the chemical exposure limits and characteristics associated
with chloroform.
Table 1.
