fETH009045r '
OIL DH
r
` 1.0 SCOPE AND APPLICATION
1.1 Method 9045 is an electrometric_.,,procedure which has been approved
for measuring pH in calcareous and noncalcareous oils ,
.. .. :._
2.0 SUMMARY OF METHOD
2.1 The soil sample is mixed either with Type II water or with a calcium
chloride solution (see Section 5.0) , depending on whether the soil
considered calcareous or noncalcareous. The is
measured with a pH meter, pH of the solution is then
3.0 INTERFERENCES
3.1 Samples with very low or very high pH may give incorrect readings
the meter. For samples with a true g on
incorrectly low. This error can be minimized by using aelowrso low-sed pH obe
dium-error
electrode. Strong acid solutions, with a true pH of <1, may give incorrectly
high pH measurements, ctly
3.2 Temperature fluctuations will cause measurement errors.
3.3 Errors will occur when the electrodes become coated. If an
electrode becomes coated with an oily material that will not rinse free the
electrode can either (1) be cleaned with an ultrasonic bath, or (2) be washed
with detergent, rinsed several times with water,
the lower third of the electrode is submerged, and thenthoroughlyred in 1:10 insed that
water, y d with
4.0 APPARATUS AND MATERIALS
4.1 pt_Meter with means for temperature compensation.
4.2 Electrodes:
4.2.1 Calomel electrode.
2 z GA ass.*I*rrroup^
x'•2,.3 A Combination electrode can be employed instKcd of Gal
- y1r:S.
