e 4
SAMPLING INSTRUCTIONS
Your facility is required to sample storm water discharges twice during each wet season, with the
primary objective to sample the run-off during the first rain storm of the wet season. The following
instructions are to provide guidance on how to collect the sample and submit it for analysis.
1. Review facility Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan and/or site map to locate the
designated discharge point. (Where the rain water run-off exits the property.)
2. Sample kits and chain of custody documents will have arrived at your facility by the last week
in September, if not please contact FGL Environmental, 209-972-0182, for additional sample
kits.
3. Collect the storm water sample from the first storm of the year, within an hour of the
beginning of run-off. (There must be run-off or do not sample.)
4. This sample is to be collected from the MS4 inspection manhole. The sampling procedure
entails removal of the cast iron inspection manhole cover and the lowering of a clean sample
collection pail on a suitably sized rope. The sample collection pail should be rinsed in the
storm water three times prior to filling of the laboratory sample collection containers. Each
sample collection container is to be filled to within one inch of the container's top with water
from the collection pail.
5. There are three sample containers which are used to test for:
1. pH, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Electro Conductivity, Nitrates + Nitrites
2. Aluminum, Iron, and Zinc
3. Oil and Grease
6. Do not pour a sample from one container into another container. Each container has its own
sample preservative, which will contaminate the other containers.
7. After the samples are collected place the containers into a refrigerator at 40°F.
8. Verify that the "Chain of Custody Document" which came with the sample kit is completed.
It should include the facility name, address, time and date of sample collection. Tests
required are pH, TSS, Oil & Grease, Electro conductivity, Nitrates+Nitrites, Aluminum, Iron,
and Zinc. (pH, TSS, 0&G, Cond., N+N, Al, Fe, Zn.)
9. Immediately contact the laboratory for sample pick-up at the telephone number on the chain
of custody document.
10. After the sample is received by the laboratory staff and the COC is signed remove and keep
the last page of the Chain of Custody Document for placement in the SWPPP. The remaining
Chain of Custody Documents are to be retained by the laboratory with the samples.
11. If the sample is kept over night it should be stored in a refrigerator (400F). It the samples are
to be shipped to the laboratory they are to be shipped in a cooler with fresh ice and shipped
by overnight delivery.
SoCal GMP Sampling Instructions 2007-2008
