Universal Waste <br />• Hazardous waste classified as universal waste are required to be managed in <br />accordance with special standards <br />• The following waste products are classified as Universal waste: <br />➢ Waste batteries including rechargeable nickel -cadmium batteries, silver -button <br />(lithium) batteries, mercury batteries, small sealed lead -acid batteries, most <br />alkaline batteries, and carbon -zinc batteries. Automotive type batteries are not <br />universal waste. <br />➢ Waste lamps fluorescent tubes (if they contain mercury above hazardous waste <br />toxicity thresholds); high-intensity discharge lamps, high-pressure sodium vapor <br />lamps, -and "any other lamp exhibiting a hazardous waste characteristic <br />➢ Cathode Ray tubes picture tubes including computer monitors, televisions, and <br />other electronic devices. containing cathode ray tubes <br />➢ Aerosol Cans aerosol cans are regulated waste if they still contain propellant or <br />product. These aerosol cans may be universal or hazardous waste depending on <br />the product they contain. Aerosol cans are not considered hazardous or <br />universal waste if they are emptied to the maximum extent practicable <br />(completely discharged) and diad not contain a RCRA regulated material. <br />Aerosol cans that did not contain a hazardous material are still considered <br />universal waste if not emptied to the maximum extent practicable. <br />➢ Waste Thermostats containing capsules or ampules of mercury must be handled <br />as universal waste <br />Note: At the time of this manual electronic wastes are being proposed for <br />management as universal waste. <br />• Universal waste containers must be labeled with the accumulation start date and <br />description as either "Universal Waste-****", "Used ****", or "Waste ****" The <br />**** describes the specific universal waste (lamps, batteries, or aerosol cans). <br />• Universal waste may be accumulated for up to one year <br />• Container used for accumulation of universal waste should remain closed in less <br />material is being added to it. The law requires these containers to be closed at the <br />end of each business day. <br />• Universal wastes are not required to be accumulated at a specified location <br />however aerosol cans must be stored away from heat or open flam <br />• Universal or hazardous waste aerosol cans must be accumulated with sufficient <br />ventilation to avoid forming an explosive atmosphere <br />• Universal wastes are exempt from hazardous waste manifesting requirements if <br />they are recycled. Shipping papers are required for lamps meeting the definition <br />of a hazardous material. <br />E! <br />
