MAINTENANCE HAZARDOUS WASTE MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
The California State Legislature developed the Hazardous Waste Control Law to protect
the people of the State of California from the long-term threats due to the indiscriminate
disposal of hazardous wastes.
This law covers the handling, storage, transportation, safe treatment, neutralization and
disposal of hazardous waste. This law is contained in Division 20 of the California
Health and Safety Code, California Code of Regulations Title 22, and other related State
codes.
This Manual is not designed to, nor does it establish a legal standard of care. It is
published solely for the information, guidance and as a reference document for the
Maintenance employees of the Department of Transportation.
The Maintenance employee shall perform each operation in the safest and most efficient
manner, while maintaining good relations with the public. The employee shall
understand the contents of this manual and be familiar with similar manuals issued by
other offices or branches of the State Department of Transportation.
Notice of errors, omissions and revisions concerning this Manual is requested.
Revisions and procedural changes will result in future revisions of the Hazardous Waste
Manual. Notice should be channeled through your District Hazmat Manager(DHM) or
forwarded to:
Department of Transportation
Headquarters Hazmat Office
1120 N Street MS 31
Sacramento CA 95814
http://onraml!.dot.ca.gov/hq/maint/em/index.htm
July 2018
