UST and Product Line Replacement-Tosco 76 Branded Facility No.11193,Stockton,CA
April 12,1999
bgs. Per the direction of Ms. Lagorio, four additional soil samples, labeled D1-2-10.5 through D4-2-
10.5, were collected from the base of over-excavated areas at approximate depths of 10.5 feet bgs.
Native soil consisted primarily of sand and silty sand. Moisture was observed in soil sample D3-2-
10.5.
The four soil samples were analyzed for TPHg, BTEX and MtBE. TPHg was not detected in three of
four soil samples, and was detected in sample D3-2-10.5 at a concentration of 29,600 ppm. MtBE
(EPA 8020) was not detected in sample D3-2-10.5, and was detected in the other soil samples at
concentrations ranging between 0.172 and 5.09 ppm.
Stockpile Sampling
On December 11, 1998, five composite soil samples (CompA through CompE) were collected for
disposal characterization from approximately 500 cubic yards of stockpiled soil generated from the
gasoline UST excavation. On December 22, 1998, one composite soil sample (Comp-PT) was
collected from approximately 90 cubic yards of stockpiled soil generated from the piping trenches. On
December 29, 1998, one additional composite soil sample (SSPT1-A,B,C,D) was collected from
approximately 100 cubic yards of stockpiled soil generated from the product piping trenches during
over-excavation activities.
All composite soil samples were analyzed for TPHg, BTEX, MtBE, and total lead. The analytical
results of the composite soil samples were within limits acceptable to the landfill. Analytical results are
summarized in Table 1.
SOIL DISPOSAL
On December 16, 1998, and January 4, 1999, Manley & Sons Trucking, Inc. of Sacramento,
California, removed soil stockpiles (represented by samples CompA through CompE, Comp-PT, and
SSPTI-A,B,C,D) from the site and transported a total of 1073.52 tons of soil to the Forward, Inc.
disposal facility in Manteca, California. Copies of soil disposal documentation are attached.
WATER DISPOSAL
On December 7, 1998, one composite groundwater sample was collected from two groundwater
monitoring wells (MW-1 and MW-2) adjacent to the gasoline UST pit. The water sample was
collected to characterize water to be pumped from the UST pit to depress the water table during the
installation of new USTs. The sample was analyzed to satisfy acceptance requirements for water
treatment at the Tosco Refinery in Rodeo, California. The sample was analyzed for static hazardous
abbreviated screen bioassay (fish bioassay), Organochlorine Pesticides and PCBs (OP&PCBs),
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), reactivity, corrosivity, ignitability (RCI), total sulfides, total
140205.02
4
