Related equipment includes valves, meters, and
pumping units. Although this dispenser piping and related equipment is aboveground it is
part of the underground storage tank (UST) system, and therefore, subject to requirements in
Chapter 6.7 of the California Health and Safety Code (H&SC).
USTS STORING MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL (MVF)
Dispenser piping and related equipment meet the definition of "pipe" in section 25281.5(a)
H&SC. Section 25291(a)(7)(E) H&SC requires secondary containment for MVF piping
installed after July 1, 1987. Therefore, this piping and related equipment under dispensers
must be equipped with secondary dispenser containment if the piping was installed after July
1, 1987.
• Upgrading MVF systems
State rules require dispenser piping installed before July 1, 1987 to be upgraded by
December 22, 1998. Corrosion protection for the piping or secondary containment is
required by December 22, 1998 if the piping is in direct contact with backfill.
Upgrading with corrosion protection or secondary containment under the dispenser is
not required if the piping was installed before July 1987 and the piping is not in direct
contact with backfill.
USTS STORING HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES OTHER THAN MVF
Section 25291(a) H&SC requires secondary containment for non-MVF piping and related
equipment installed after January 1, 1984. Therefore, dispenser piping and related
equipment under dispensers must be equipped with secondary dispenser containment if the
piping was installed after January 1, 1984.
• Upgrading non-MVF systems
If the UST was installed before January 1, 1984 and stores hazardous substances other
than motor vehicle fuel, secondary dispenser containment must be installed by
December 22, 1998.
Post -it" Fax Note 7671
Date' ;
pages
To Svc
From
Go./DeptG
CO.
Phone #/`%JC`
Phone#
Fax #
/ " j iG —G": % ✓Fax
# Z,-=. /v>
