Box 2009
Stockton, Ca 95201
Subject: Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report, Tank 865-D1U1 at Building 865
Attached is an Underground Storage Tank Unauthorized Release (Leak)/
Contamination Site Report for tank system 865-D1U1 at Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory (LLNL) Site 300.
Underground storage tank 865-D1U1 at Building 865 was a 4000 gallon single-wall
FRP tank that supplied diesel fuel to the Building 865 boiler.
On October 20, 1994, the tank was removed from the ground. Although the tank
was in excellent condition diesel fuel was noted in gravel fill around the tank. The
presence of diesel fuel in fill gravel is the probable result of historic overfilling.
Several cubic yards of fill gravel apparently contaminated with diesel fuel have been
excavated and are being stored for additional evaluation.
Excavation to remove the tank showed that the tank is underlain by a concrete tie-
down slab. We discussed a plan of action with Mr. Bill Snavely of your office and
agreed to proceed as follows: We will bore holes through the concrete slab two feet
from each end. We will go through the bore holes to collect soil samples in native
soil materials two to three feet below the slab. Samples will be submitted for TPH-D
(diesel fuel) analyses.
An Equal Opportunity Employer•University of California•P.O.Box 808 Livermore,CA 94551-9900•Telephone(510)422-1100 •Twx 910-386-8339 UCLLL L VMR
