This
instrument detects predominantly volatile organic compounds with ionization
potentials below the lamp voltage.
SITE VISIT
The team arrived at the facility at 0830 on May 16, 2001. The purpose of the visit was
to monitor compliance with regulations governing generation, storage, and shipment of
hazardous wastes. Industrial hygiene monitoring support was requested due to
potential exposures to radioactive waste. Industrial hygiene monitoring for VOC
exposure was also conducted due to the presence of waste solvents.
DTSC personnel were escorted around the site by Stan Terusaki (Environmental
Analyst) and Sav Mancierl (Environmental Analyst). After the in-briefing, the group
proceeded to building 883 which is a permitted storage facility and a 90-day storage
area for wastes. The 90-day section contained mainly radioactive wastes from
explosive testing areas, solvents and oils from manufacturing operations, and asbestos
from abatement activities. Radiation levels from 50-500 micro-RAD per hour were
detected in this area. No VOCs were detected. DTSC personal protective ensemble
included steel toe boots with street clothes.
1
Monitoring Results - 90 Day Stora ga Area
Time Instrument Serial Nr. Personal protective equipment (PPE) for
DTSC personnel consisted of boots for this area. Radiation in this area generally
matched background of 7-15 micro-RAD per hour. However, three unusual spikes of at
least 250 micro-RAD per hour were noted while in the area. For comparison, a Site
300 employee was called to the location with a gamma detector that measured in the
same units as the Ludlum-19. The LLNL instrument readings were identical to the
