The purpose of this site visit was to
ensure permit compliance. The visit occurred on 16 August 2001.
This site has been the testing center for explosives used in the development of
nuclear weapons by the Department of Defense operating since the 1950s. As a
nuclear research facility the Department of Energy administers the site with the
University of California system providing the day to day administration of these
sites.
Known hazards associated with this site are radioactive isotopes (tritium and
U238), beryllium, explosive materials, and solvents. The site consists of four
active testing centers. All testing centers have used above ground testing. The
one exception is area 801 that has a new contained testing center.
Contamination control at these sites include removal of all visible materials after
explosions, removal of gravel layer periodically for low level radiation disposal,
and in the case of the contained testing center, air filtration and water treatment
after washing of all materials/residue from explosion testing.
9 Printed on Recycled Paper
