n
1
EPA investigations show that the large majority of existing UST leaks are found in
piping systems. Pressurized piping, the most commonly used type in the U.S.,
can release large amounts of petroleum products through a small hole in a
short period of time. For this reason new laws require that all pressurized
piping systems contain automatic leak detection equipment capable of
detecting a 3 gallon per hour leak ( at 10 psi) within one hour of its
occurrence. This is objective identified in case 1 above; large leak/quickly.
Only pressurized lines are required to detect large leaks in a short time
period. However, both lines and tanks are also required to be tested for small
yleaks on either a monthly or an annual basis as required in case 2 above.
Keep in mind that all equipment manufactured for use in the U.S. must provide
®' detection as outlined in the following system options.
n
11, Control Engineers, U.S.A.
