During <br /> removal the tank was noted to be leaking. On January 6, 1989, a soil sample was taken <br /> which detected contamination, total petroleum hydrocarbons 5100 ppm, benzene 20 ppm, <br /> toluene 550 ppm, ethylbenzene 430 ppm, total xylene 2100 ppm, ethylene dibromide 400 <br /> ppb, and lead 87 ppm. <br /> During January 1990, the property ownership was transferred from George and <br /> Stella Gemellos to Surendra and Shobhana Patel. <br /> A work plan to re-excavate was requested by PHS/EHD letter dated August 2, 1990. <br /> An office hearing was held September 14, 1990 to discuss the site and was attended by <br /> George Gemellos. <br /> The removal of UST #2 and the re-excavation of soil contamination associated with the <br /> former UST #1 were attempted May 31, 1991. During this attempt, four more USTs <br /> were identified; located in the area of former UST #1 were UST #3 and #4 and located <br /> in the area of UST #2 were UST #5 and #6. The re-excavation of contaminated soil <br /> associated with UST #1 and removal of UST #2 was not continued. In total, there are <br /> five abandoned USTs located on the property. <br /> Negotiations have been underway to remove these tanks. A problem is presented by <br /> UST #5 and #6 because the tanks are partially located beneath the Idlewild Market <br /> building. Continue negotiations for the closure and/or removal of UST #5 and #6. This <br /> problem does not exist for UST #3 and #4 which are located in the area of former <br /> UST#1.
