i
RISKPRO'S SESOIL for Windows User's Guide
i 1 . INTRODUCTION
The Seasonal Soil Compartment model (SESOIL) is a one-dimensional vertical transport model
' for the unsaturated soil zone It estimates pollutant concentrations in the soil profile following
introduction via direct application and/or interaction with other media (i e. deposition from air)
Processes simulated in SESOIL are categorized in three cycles - hydrologic, sediment, and
Ipollutant The hydrologic cycle includes rainfall, surface runoff, infiltration, soil water content,
evapotranspiration, and groundwater runoff. The sediment cycle includes sediment washload
as a result of rainstorms (i.e, soil erosion that results from surface runoff) The pollutant cycle
' includes convective transport, volatilization, adsorption/desorption, and degradation/decay The
SFSOIL model describes water transport, sediment transport, pollutant fate, pollutant migration
' to groundwater, and soil quality
SESOIL can be used as a screening-level model, utilizing fewer soil, chemical, and
' meteorological values as input than most other similar models Output of the SESOIL model
includes time-varying pollutant concentrations at various soil depths and pollutant loss from the
unsaturated zone in terms of surface runoff, percolation to the groundwater, volatilization, and
' degradation SESOIL can be used as an assessment tool in performing exposure assessments.
The purpose of this document is to provide an up-to-date users manual for SESOIL as it is used
in the RISKPRO Windows system The model in RISKPRO was recently enhanced by David
Hetrick to allow the user to specify the initial adsorbed-soil concentrations at any sublayers. The
new model also includes the option of estimating the average concentrations in the groundwater
' This user's guide provides guidance on the use of the use of the SESOIL Windows interface and
g P
illustrates its use with two example runs This guide is divided into seven sections Section 2
' gives you an overview of the SESOIL model and how SESOIL can be used as an assessment
tool Section 3 discusses the assumptions and equations used in the model Section 4 describes
the Windows implementation of the SESOIL interface, including descriptions of the screen
' sequences and the link between SESOIL and AT123D Section 5 provides you with the
minimum requirements and loading information for Windows SESOIL Section 6 describes the
tinformation necessary to use the SESOIL interface, including
+ Accessing an Existing File or Opening a New File
' • SESOIL File Naming and Numbering Conventions
• Saving Input Files
• Accessing Chemical Files and Databases in SESOIL
' • Setting Up a Default Editor for Viewing Output Files
0 Submitting an Input File to the Model
• SESOIL Windows Interface Commands and Function Keys
' • Import File Option in SESOIL
' Page 1
