(Dole), Geomatrix Consultants, Inc. (Geomatrix),
has prepared this work plan for collecting a shallow groundwater sample near the former
underground storage tank(UST) area at the former Dole Fresh Fruit—Victor Fruit Operations
facility (the site) (Figure 1).
Lo A 550-gallon UST containing gasoline (Figure 2)was removed from the site in 1991. Site
closure was requested for the former UST area(Chaney, Walton&McCall [LLC],
October 15, 1999, "Support for Site Closure") from the San Joaquin County Public Health
Services, Environmental Health Division(PHS/EHD). In response, the PHS/EHD requested
that soil and/or groundwater samples be collected from the former UST area for analysis of
methyl tertiary butyl ether(MtBE).
In March 2000, soil samples collected at about 15 and 20 feet below ground surface (bgs)
from two borings in this area(Figure 2)were analyzed for gasoline oxygenates using EPA
La Method 8260 and for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (collectively referred to as
BTEX) using EPA Method 8020. No BTEX compounds were detected in these samples.
MtBE was detected at concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 0.08 milligrams per kilogram
(mg/kg) in three of the four samples (these results will be submitted under separate cover by
Chaney, Walton&McCall [LLC] to the PHS/EHD). Based on these results, Geomatrix has
prepared this work plan for collecting a shallow groundwater sample in the former UST area
" for MtBE analysis.
PROJECT APPROACH
A shallow groundwater sample will be collected for laboratory analysis from one location in
the immediate vicinity of the former UST area(Figure 2). Available data indicate that the
i predominant horizontal groundwater flow direction beneath the site is to the northwest.
Depths to water measured in three on-site groundwater monitoring wells located
Geomatrix Consultants, Inc.
V Engineers, Geologists, and Environmental Scientists
%\fr21deptdata\PROJECD6508.0001document16508-01.doe
i.r
