Licensed for the sole use of the purchaser. See license agreement penalties for distribution.
CGA G-1.5-2015 COMPRESSED GAS ASSOCIATION INC. PAGE 5
6.4 Mechanical thickeners
Commercial operations have demonstrated that the slurry can be concentrated up to 60% solids in a centrifuge.
Mechanical thickeners can obtain a concentration of approximately 40% solids.
6.5 Drying
Dilute or concentrated slurry can be dried effectively by mixing it with quicklime. The surplus water in the car-
bide lime slurry slakes the quicklime so that the percent of solids in the resultant mixture is appreciably in-
creased; even to the extent of achieving a commercially dry hydrate. This is accomplished in a slurry tank with
a manually controlled discharge, a quicklime feeder, and a mixing tank or hydrator. The quicklime hydration
develops considerable heat that vaporizes some of the water and the volatile impurities of carbide lime. The
resulting hydrated lime is completely free from sulfide and other objectionable odors.
7 Distribution
7.1 Semisolid
At about 50% or higher solids (the concentration reached by prolonged storage in ponds or through the use of
mechanical filtration), the consistency of the carbide lime is that of a fairly firm putty, which can be effectively
handled by clam shell or dipper type power shovels or by scrapers or scoops operated from draglines. This
material can be transported in water-tight hopper-body trucks, river barges, or by rail in bulk cement-type hop-
per cars.
7.2 Slurry
Carbide lime of 30% to 40% solids is normally produced for commercial distribution. Slurry can be produced in
tank-truck batches or continuously prepared and stored in tanks for on-demand distribution. Delivery of lime
slurry is typically affected by tank-truck or car haulage and has been demonstrated to be satisfactory.
8 Safety hazards
8.1 Personnel
Personnel working with or in the immediate area of carbide lime should be familiar with this product's proper-
ties, safety precautions, and first aid requirements. Carbide lime hydrates in slurry, semisolid paste, and dry
solid forms is a mild caustic, which upon intimate contact with the skin or tissue of the human body first causes
irritation and then more serious burns after prolonged exposure. Access to lime storage and handling areas
should be limited to trained, authorized personnel only.
8.1.1 Protective clothing
All personnel working with or in the area of carbide lime should wear eye protection that has side shields. In
areas where splashing of lime slurry is likely to occur, chemica; splash goggles and a full-face shield should be
worn for additional protection. Personnel should wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers. The proper type of
gloves and footwear should also be worn. Depending on the type of lime being handled, this would be leather
for dry material or rubber for slurry. Where exposure to dry carbide lime or lime dust is possible, an approved
nuisance-dust respirator should be worn. Contaminated clothing including gloves and shoes should be re-
moved immediately and flushed with water to remove lime residue, which could cause injury to the skin.
8.1.2 Safety equipment
All areas where carbide lime is handled should have an approved and easily accessible eye wash and safety
shower. Spare safety glasses, face shields, and dust respirators should be available for visitors or in case of
damage to worker's gear.
This document licensed for the sole use of the purchaser. It may not be shared with any other person or used after the expiration date
without the express written permission of the CGA. Any unauthorized use, reproduction, distribution, or modification of this printed page will
result in a$5,000 liquidated damages fee plus loss of access to CGA publications for one year for your company.
