Center St., Suite A
Stockton, CA 95202
RE: Former Underg:uund Tanks at 9170 Thornton Road, County Health Site Code
2193
Dear Mr. Kleinfeld;
As you requested, I have reviewed files related to the underground tank removed at the above
referenced site, as well as the nearby 7-11 facility at Thornton Road and Waudman Avenue.
In October of 1991, the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Division (EHD) issued a
letter to Mr. Richard Northcutt notifying him of the filing of a contaminated site report for the
former Walts Auto Repair at 9170 Thornton Road (APN 076-330-19). Also located on the
parcel is the Ivy Motel (9172 Thornton) which is served by a shallow domestic well along
Connie Avenue. In the letter, it was indicated that lab results of water samples from this well
prompted EHD to review the results of soil sampling from beneath the former underground tank
which was removed in September, 1987.
The soil samples referred to included 8 discrete samples from 4 different locations beneath 2 fuel
tanks and 2 small waste oil tanks. Samples were analyzed for B T EX, ethylene dibromide
(EDB), PCB's, purgeable chlorinated hydrocarbons, total lead and total volatile petroleum
hydrocarbons (TVPH). Analysis showed non-detectable levels for all analytes in all samples
with the exceptions of 15 mg/kg and 3.1 mg/kg of TVPH beneath the two fuel tanks. The
County Health District, in a letter to Mr. Doug Carter of the Board of Supervisors, dated
February 24, 1988, stated:
11-05-87 Received soil sample results from 4 tank removals. All samples were 'non-
detectable' for.petroleum hydrocarbons, except Tank #I sample had 15 ppm TPH (total
HPL6n.RWl
